🌱 Raíces de la Tierra Spring Break Camp Recap

April 6–9 | Hosted by Well Being Community Center in partnership with The Clearwater School (Bothell)

This spring, something truly special took root.

From April 6–9, our Raíces de la Tierra Spring Break Camp brought together a vibrant community of young learners, families, and educators for four unforgettable days of exploration, creativity, and connection. With about 65 campers each day and nearly 75 total participants, our space was filled with energy, curiosity, and joy in both English and Spanish.

🌎 Learning From the Land

At the heart of camp was a simple but powerful idea: nature is one of our greatest teachers.

Campers spent their days outdoors, building a deeper connection to the environment through hands-on experiences. They explored concepts like land stewardship, composting, and soil health, learning how small actions can make a big impact on the earth.

One highlight? Nature mapping, where campers slowed down, observed their surroundings, and documented the beauty and details of the natural world around them. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and truly see nature.

🐟 A Moment to Remember: Salmon Release

A truly unforgettable experience was partnering with Sound Salmon Solutions, who guided campers in releasing salmon fry into the creek.

This hands-on activity helped youth understand local ecosystems, the life cycle of salmon, and the importance of protecting our waterways. Watching the salmon swim off into their new home sparked excitement, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility in every child.

🎨 Creativity with Purpose

Campers tapped into their creativity by making arts and crafts using recycled materials—transforming everyday items into something new and meaningful.

This wasn’t just about art—it was about rethinking waste, practicing sustainability, and discovering that creativity and care for the planet go hand in hand.

💰 Building Smart Habits Early

We were also excited to welcome BECU, who led engaging, age-appropriate conversations about saving and spending. Through interactive activities, campers began to build a foundation for financial confidence—learning skills that will grow with them over time.

🤝 Friendship, Language, and Belonging

As a bilingual camp, Raíces de la Tierra created a space where language became a bridge, not a barrier. Campers practiced both English and Spanish naturally throughout the day—while making new friendships, building confidence, and celebrating culture.

The result? A warm, inclusive environment where every child felt seen, heard, and connected.

🌿 Why Nature-Based Learning Matters

Experiences like this remind us that learning doesn’t only happen inside four walls. When children engage with the outdoors, they develop:

  • Curiosity and creativity

  • Confidence and independence

  • Environmental awareness and responsibility

  • Stronger social connections

Nature invites kids to ask questions, explore freely, and learn through doing—and that kind of learning sticks.
